It is a small data file that digitally binds a cryptographic key to an organization’s detail. It is installed on a web server.
Note-Cryptography or is the practice and study of techniques for secure communication in the presence of third parties called adversaries.

Importance of SSL
And now the question is why it is necessary? So like we discussed above it is like a security system.
Obviously, it is really important because the information you send on the internet is passed from different computers to the destination server.
Any computer in between can see your information like passwords and other sensitive details if it is not encrypted with an SSL certificate.
With so many advantages, why would anyone not use SSL? but there are also some disadvantages of SSL certificates. Cost is an obvious main disadvantage. SSL providers charge so much higher than its actual rate. They need to set up a trusted infrastructure and validate your identity so there is a cost involved which is necessary as well as low.
Performance is another disadvantage of SSL. Because the information that you send has to be encrypted by the server otherwise it can affect your website performance.
The performance difference is only noticeable for websites with very large numbers of visitors and can be minimized with special hardware in such cases.
Overall, the disadvantages of using SSL are few but the advantages have more weight on them. From my point of view, I think the SSL certificate can help every website.
Proper use of Free SSL certificate will help you to protect your customers, to protect you, and help you to gain your customer’s trust.
